Answer: popular TV show host born in Ontario, Canada, whose favorite animal is the Musk Ox
Question:Who is Alex Trebek, popular TV show host of Jeopardy.
It might come as no surprise to some of you but most have no idea that Alex Trebek's favorite pet is the Musk Ox. That's right. In 1984 Trebek adopted two Musk Ox of the Palmer Heard and has been involved with the program ever since, going as far as supervising adoption of muskoxen to many others.
I was recently traveling in Alaska with my wife, when I came across the Palmer Herd musk ox on the Musk Ox Farm in Palmer, Alaska. There on the farm, these adorable animals have been gathered by caring and passionate group of people trying to assist in the preservation of these breed of animal, while at the same time helping a native tribe take the oxen's soft hair - known as quivit, pronounced "KIVY-oot - which enables Alaskan natives to create scarfs, winter shawls and winter hats (sotra like a fisherman's cap) which are sold to tourists and Alaskans alike.
Musk oxen are social animals that live in herds, typically the size of 10-20 animals. However, what's most interesting and reason that Alex Trebek has taken a liking to these animals is due to their defensive formation when attached by wolfs or other predators. The musk ox bulls and cows will face outward and circle their young thereby literally building a circle wall around their young. This allows them to defend and face their predators when threatened or attacked, but more importantly, keep the young out of harms way.
Trebek is involved in the "Friends of the Musk Ox", a program that is part of the Musk Ox Farm in Palmer, Alaska. When I sat down to write this story, I came across their website where both he and Olivia Newton-John are active participants of the program. Anyone can join to support the musk ox.Here's the site: http://www.muskoxfarm. org/
If you're traveling in Alaska, I highly recommend stopping by the farm; though don't do it in the winter because temperature can get as low as -70 degrees Fahrenheit.
