Cheryl Cole said that she has had a fantastic year in a "weird way" as the new series of X Factor was launched.

In recent months, Cole's marriage has been the subject of intense speculation and she appeared at the press launch minus her wedding ring.

She replied 'Nice try' when asked why it appeared to be absent in parts of the first episode of the new series, screened at the launch.

Speaking later, Cole, who replaced Sharon Osbourne was asked if taking on the show had given her a focus during a tough year.

She said:

'Do you know, I've actually had in a weird way a fantastic year, to be honest.

We did a sell-out tour, which was an unbelievable experience. To play the O2, you can't describe that feeling.

So then to roll on to this is probably one of The Best Years I've ever had, ironically.'

Cole said that being around fellow judge Simon Cowell 'and his ego' had taught her a lot and helped boost her confidence.

Hairdresser Aimee Walton previously claimed to have had a drunken encounter with footballer Ashley Cole in December.

His wife initially rubbished the allegations and said she would not let Miss Walton destroy her marriage.

Within days other women came forward to allege they had enjoyed trysts with the player.

Viewers will see Cole, who said she was quite an emotional person, reduced to tears during the X Factor show.

She is placed in a dilemma when a male hopeful from her days as a contestant on Popstars: The Rivals auditions before X Factor judges.

While Cole's career has rocketed, he been slogging it out in working men's clubs.

Cole gets out of her chair at the point when judges are expected to comment, saying: 'I'm not happy to do this.'
