David Beckham has revealed his own tragic experience of knife crime as he and fellow England stars make it their goal to help stamp out the menace.
The world's most famous footballer joined Rio Ferdinand and David James yesterday in supporting the "It Doesn't Have to Happen" initiative which is backed by the Football Association.
Beckham was only 13 when the brother of one of his best friends, about to sign for Leyton Orient, was paralysed after being caught up in a street fight and stabbed.
He said: "No-one wants to see the devastation I saw my friend and his family go through."
The LA Galaxy star was speaking at the launch in Hertfordshire attended by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith.
