Anderson Cooper did a special on Drew Barrymore on 60 minutes. Here are the highlights.
Acting has been in the family for 100years. "Circus of odd interesting peopel who loved acting," says Drew.
She started at 11months old w/ dog food and big blockbuster hit came during "E.T." the Spielberg film. Spielberg says, "Drew is tenatiously optimistic." Drew says she liked hanging out with E.T. even though she knew he was fake.
Father who was actor was never around. Alcohol and drugs were part of his life. Instead, Drew found a home on the sets with actors, producers, directors and other artists.
By age 9 Drew started smoking, drinking and going to clubs. At age 11 she started smoking marijuana by her friends mom. By age 12 she was doing cocaine. At 14 she was forced into rehab. While in rehab her dad called... asking for money.
At age 15, Drew emancipated, divorcing herself from her parents through a court in California. She got a job working at a coffee house. But her heart was not in anything other than acting. So drew started auditioning again even though Hollywood told her she was too fat and not likely to make a comeback.
After many small parts in movies and TV appearances, Drew was able to make a comeback, and now, her new directorial debu is "Whip It" starring Ellen Page. Her friends are now her family who work with her on her films. She reconciled with her father before his death.
