GOP mayor Myers resigns after gay hooker sex scandal

ONLINE REPORTS -- After vowing in October not to resign after being photographed in his underwear by a man claiming to be a prostitute,, Medford, New Jersey Mayor Chris Myers (R) announced his resignation from office Monday evening.

"My work commitments will not allow me to devote the time that is needed in the months ahead," the 46-year-old wrote in a two-page letter to the township manager and clerk, according to the Medford Courier-Post. "That is why, today, I am resigning from the Medford Township Council, effective immediately."

Myers was asked in October if he had requested the services of a young man associated with "Rentboy.com," a site offering the services of gay escorts. He was also questioned on whether he had promised the escort a car and a recording studio. Both issues Myers said he "couldn't comment on something I don't know" and that he was "wronged by stories pinned on anonymous reports."

Photographs also emerged in late October of Myers sprawled on a bed in a pair of tight-fitting blue Calvin Klein underwear.

"It's time to pass the baton, and allow others to take the reins," he said. "I'm "looking forward to leaving the public arena and enjoying the next chapter of my life with the most wonderful family and friends any one could ask for."

Myers has been married for 15 years and has two children.
