No, I don't ever write about Kate Gosselin and her family, but this latest photo of her spanking her daughter Leah is stirring up some controversy amongst parents and I want to hear your take on it.
Spanking: Is it ok to spank your child these days?

I say hell yes it is! Sometimes kids need a little tough love. Nothing that will hurt them, mind you. Just something to make them understand that you are not fooling around.

In my opinion

i don't think it's ok, because what if that person does more that spanking, my point is, it might turn into something worse, so i think it is better to just not spank you kids, i think it is just a minor form of abuse, hitting doesn't teach anyone anything other than it might be ok to do the same to other people because mommy and daddy do it to me. if you know what i mean

Spanking is sometimes necessary and loving if done in appropriate ways, like in private in a controlled way, explaining to the child what they did wrong. Giving yourself time to take a breath and do it rationally.

Spanking is appropriate if done in love. If done out of anger then it becomes abuse. Being a mother of 8 myself I wouldn't have it any other way. Children need to learn that there are consequences for bad behaviour. People who don't spank thier children are the ones who have pregnant or drug addicted teens.

I'm sure whatever Leah did to have Kate spank her bum must have been serious enough for her to have felt the need to have had discipline Leah that way. Kate has never before disciplined any of her children by spanking them. So I think, I'm sure It was for good reason! As a mom of 3 children my self ranging in close age's together know what the toughness of single motherhood can be. I believe spanking is necessary only when needed and it ends there. I love Kate. I think she's a wonderful mother because she has the ability to balance life with all those children. She doesn't get the credit she so deserves!

i think Kate and jon are teying to do the best that they can and that everyone should keep theyre judgements to themselves. The reason why i say this is because if anyone of us were in Kate and Jon place you'd wouldnt want everyone passing judgement on us like this.

I also believe in spanking if done in the right manner. Alot of kids don't learn just by talking and you can only talk so much. But, I don't believe in beating on the child in NO WAY. You need to do it when your not so angry, I also believe its the last resort you should take. I don't care for Kate and all the things she stands for, but I don't believe she should be prosecuted for spanking her children. I have seen on TV somtimes how those kids act, and I think they should probably be spanked more often!! I do however think that the show should be cancelled, because I think the fame, money, and everything else the show does has gone to Kate's head and is the reason for her marriage in turmoil!!

Sometimes a spanking helps define the line between Parent and Child. It needs to be controlled, communicated and targeted as a last result to get the respect from your child and not inflict pain. It's meant to be an attitude adjustment or a wakeup call for your child that hopefully will never need to be repeated more than once in their life time. Spanking my children has been my last resort for three of my five children and was very effective at that time.

If a child misbehaves they should be spanked. I was, it never did me any harm. Abuse is something totally different to disciplining your children. I believe in caning at school too. There would be less cheeky and off the rail teenagers for sure. Instead some kids run riot and there is nothing the teachers an do. Expel them? That is worse. All this naughty step business, what has become of us. Take responsibility for your offspring. Be responsible otherwise they will not be very nice adults. A smack for misbehaving does not teach a child to be agressive it teaches them how to behave. When mummy says "stop blowing that whistle" she means it. It is not negotiable.

Well my dad spank me when I was a kid and from then on I didn't do wrong. It opens the kids eyes sometimes. As far as John and Kate the show is getting boring without them together. It was fun watching it with the kids and the parents doing stuff together, now it's just boring. I mean the motorcycles, please don't waste my time watching that on TV. I will start watching the other family kids shows because the husband and wife are together. I really think John and Kate should take a break from the show and before they decide on divorce remember the kids and who they effect around them. Kate seems to be doing the most damage and I really like her, now I am disappointed in her as a mom and wife.

listen people, if you hit your children out of frustration or in an attempt to control their behavior, then you are abusive. spanking is an outdated practice and has no place in current day parenting. If you are using spanking as a last resort, maybe there are some tools you need to develop as a parent. To teach children that it is okay for people that love you to hit you, and that it is okay to hit people who are weaker, younger, and who cant defend themselves, then congratulations, you are doing fine work in showing kids that it is okay to turn to violence if you cant work through issues with accountability and responsability. if you dont as a parent, why should they as kids?

I think the pressures and restrictions society has put on us as parent's and the right we once had to raise a child as we saw fit is the very reason children of today 1. grow up far to quickly 2. have little regard for rules 3 have no respect for their peers. I am a mother of 3 and one of my toddler's had a fascination for playing with lights and plug ins, she was sticking a toy in an outlet for the umpteenth time. I attempted to reason with the toddler once again by talking to her, My Mom jumped in and said she is barely two for heaven sakes what makes you think she understands danger? Mom got on her knees to eye level, replayed what my child did, dropped the toy, gave her a good smack on the hand enough to draw tears, in a firm raised voice she then said Owies, baby boo boo,No, No More boo boo. She put the toy back in my daughter's hand and pushed her hand to the plug in again and my daughter screamed NO, No, No. That was the end of that game and my child never played it ever again. She obviously associated it with pain. A good example of what is right, or wrong. We even as adults need tough love and don't give that to children near enough to teach them that life has consequences. You steal, you get incarcerated, you lie there are consequences, your late, your fired, if we don't take a tough stand on our kids what favors are we doing to society let alone our children. Don't we want to drill it into there heads in whatever way we see fit that they are responsible for their actions as a child no differently than they would be as an adult. I spanked all my children from that day forward when it was called for and always warned, next time you do that I will be spanking you with this belt.(by personal choice) Not my hand, my hand I use to caress them with, we have one specific cotton belt with no buckle that I have kept for 27 years and each child got it no more than twice. They knew I meant business when I said, next time you do that, you are getting the Belt for me and they do when we walk in the door after leaving a public place because of their unruliness, they knew what was waiting for them at home. Now they too have children and are using the same loving method of teaching so thank you to all those parents who agreed that spanking is not necessarily a bad thing. There is good and bad to it and each of us as parents should have a right to discipline the way than can be best to each child as they too are different in personality. I do watch the show and I would have whopped that little girl a long time ago. Good for you Kate, Jon should be taking a stronger stand with disciplining too.

spanking is spanking...its used in almost every household with children....its not abuse unless agressive force is being used, com'on people sometimes you spank your children. its a lesson learned thats all ....i think ppl are looking for reasons to find this as a form of abuse. ....remember when you were a child did you get spanked? ...i am assuming thats a big yes! was it considered abuse?...no, did you learn a lesson after the spanking?...yes...thought so.

God gave us extra padding on our behinds for that reason. If you spare the rod you spoil the child. In agreance with other comments ,spanking when done properly is for discipline reasons and to hold the child accountable for their actions.Communication with the child is key before and after the discipline ,in addtion to reasurance that the parent loves the child but does not like nor tolerate their unwanted behaviors.A spank without explanation or affirmation of love is border line abuse , and of course any contact to other parts of the childs body other than the hand or the buttox should be considered abuse. You can only issue a child so many time outs ,and take away video games,I-pods,cell phones etc, before you have to resort to what the child has required all along and that is a good swat to the behind to get thier attention.I was spanked and it didnt effect me negatively.I respect my parents and am grateful they took the time to explain the consequences to my actions and affirmed thier love for me.A parent who does not inforce discipline is spineless and only has themself to blame for continous poor child behavior.Since spanking has been ruled abuse ,and removed from schools its no wonder the crime rate has gone up amongst youth. Its no surprise that teachers in some States are behind bullet proof glass, its no surprise there are metal detectors in schools..but heaven forbid we shatter the childs ego and self esteem with discipline and hold them accountable..Lets just keep giving warnings and watch our society crumble with crime, sexual disease, teen pregnancy, and drugs..Oh and one more thing, lets worry about our own children not John and Kates...lets leave them to discipline thier children the way they see fit and stop comparing ourselves to what others do or dont do.

There is nothing learned or gained by a child who gets spanked. Wait, you are actually showing and teaching how to hit. So I guess if that's what you're going for, great! It's a parents way of venting their own frustrations and spanking happens when a parent is at the end of their rope. I do not see it as any means of discipline.

Leave these people alone. They have enough going on without people taking unauthorized pictures of these children.

Spanking does not "teach" children that it's okay to hit. Kids hit out of anger or frustration. And since we're grown-ups that shouldn't be the way we operate. People tend to equate discipline and punishment. Punishment (i.e. spanking) is what kids should get when discipline (loss of privileges, etc.) doesn't work. I can count on one hand how many times I've had to spank my kids and they're both grown and on their own.

OK...I understand from reading the comments that some people think spankin is ok and some not, well I don't agree I child should be spanked. I know sometimes a child can cross the border but you can discplin a child without having to lay a hand on them. It will show fear and parents thinks it's a good way to keep them in line will it's not. My parents did that to me and I was terrified of them. There is always time out and etc. Spanking is hands on, i understand parents can get fusterated, i am 22 and i have a 2 year old, when I get mad, it's time out. Just the thought of me smackin hit butt, even it's a little tap and nothing serious it bothers me. I want to be able to put him in time out and when he understands be able to talk to him. People see both sides to this. Talking to your child is better than hands on, even if it is a lil spanking. There are more ways of dealing sistuation like that instead of spanking. You can tell by leah's face she is really upset. She could have put her in her room or time out or something, rather grabbing her arm and spanking

Spare the rod and spoil the child. My parents spanked me when I deserved it and I certainly don't hold any animosity towards my parents. Heck, they probably did me a great service! Kate nad Jon are so in the limelight right now that if they sneezed the wrong way it would end up as a headline.

Horse fucking shit. I raised a daughter without EVER hitting her once in her now 25-year life, and she is the single most honest, well-motivated, hard-working, strong-charactered person I have ever had the privilege to meet. You hit, you harm. End of story. Absofsteel

I COMPLETELY AGREE in regards to spanking only when all else fails! I was spanked as a child and I am I think a positive, nurturing and caring individual, who knows right from worng in the world! I ALSO COMPLETELY AGREE with the statement that the rise in crime is a direct result of spineless parenting! Our parents' parents believed that children should be seen and not heard, which I think is another extreme in itself, but a child in that day and age bahaved! I myself can only count on one hand the number of times I've had to spank my chilren, but I too explained the reason why, I received an apology and then we enjoyed a good cuddle afterwards. Time out is a wonderful form of disipline however, There is a time and a place for everything, you can not live your life one way only. There always has to be room for exceptions when needed.

i as so sock and tired of hearing about this family it just makes me want to puke! they are not a family figure and are the most disrupted people ive ever seen! First off! if Kate would of learned how to treat her husband with respect other then trash him all the time they "might" have had a chance to a good marage and kids would of had both parents for a life time...but you cant treat a person like trash all the time and expect them to love you forever! she got what she deserves and from what i can see...she is just a gold digger and uses her kids for fame and fortune and to that said SHE MAKES ME PUKE! ITS TIME FOR THEM TO GO!

I wonder how any family would do under constant media attention. Let alone one with 8 children. People should remember, we all live in glass houses.

My daughter was spanked when it was needed and she didnt repeat any of the negative behavior that the spanking was for, it does teach a kid to make better and more positive choices in life, and at 20 years old she is the most generous honest person i know, wish i was more like her, and by the way she will spank her kids if its needed and of course when she is done school and having her own that is. Oh wait she was spanked and still getting a great education, not pregnant before its to soon, and has many friends, your right spanking does ruin kids ang makes them more violent give me a break.
