The release date for
Tom Hooper's
Les Misrables is still seven months out, but Oscar buzz has been surrounding this project from the get-go. No surprise there - it is, after all, a splashy cinematic adaptation of a beloved Broadway musical and classic
Victor Hugo novel, with the Oscar-winning director of
The King's Speech at the helm and A-listers like
Hugh Jackman,
Russell Crowe, and
Anne Hathaway among its stars. Regardless of how the finished product turns out, any film with that kind of pedigree is bound to attract a fair amount of attention.
Fortunately, what we've seen of it so far suggests that
Les Misrables actually stands a chance of living up to all that hype. The first set photos of Jackman and Crowe (as leads Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert, respectively) hit earlier this spring, and today we've got a fresh batch of official stills that show, in addition to Jackman, Crowe, and Hathaway,
Amanda Seyfried as Cosette,
Eddie Redmayne as Marius, and stage vet
Samantha Barks as ponine. Check out the new images after the jump.
The recently released photos are combination of stills from the film and behind-the-scenes snapshots. I especially love the one of the two students sitting and conversing on a railing, which looks impeccably historical at first glance until you realize everyone in it is drinking from plastic water bottles and Styrafoam cups. But the real news here is that we're getting our first official looks at three key players - Cosette, Marius, and ponine.

The production clearly isn't skimping on costuming, set design, or talent. Of course there's much more to the film than that, but it does look gorgeous so far.
Les Misrables will land
December 14.
Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misrables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption-a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.
