Universal Pictures has preemptively acquired Rodney Rothman's pitch The Something , reports Variety .Rothman, who was the youngest head writer in the history of "Late Night With David Letterman," will write and produce the film.The story, which the studio is keeping under wraps, is described as an ensemble comedy/horror hybrid set in deep space, similar in tone to Sony's Zombieland . ...Read more at Coming Soon

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Universal Pictures is looking to reboot the theatrical "American Pie" series by developing a new version. The third title in the franchise, American Wedding , hit theaters in 2003, and was followed by a slew of DVD titles that carried the "American Pie Presents" banner.While Universal declined to comment on the report, the newspaper adds that at least some of the original cast is interested in

In an article published by The Hollywood Reporter (via Reuters ) talking about Oscar nominees, the trade mentions that The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner is lining up his next projects: Renner is in talks with Universal and director Peter Berg about taking the lead role in "Battleship." Universal has purchased David Guggenheim’s spec Safe House for $600k against $900k, winning out against two other movie studios in a bidding war. The action thriller tells the story of a CIA agent who becomes the only survivor after a CIA safe house attack, and must help a dangerous prisoner avoid being killed as they escape to a second safe house, “outmaneuvering various forces that want them both dead.”
