The Sports Illustrated cover jinx appears to have finally caught up to Tom Brady.
The New England Patriots quarterback suffered a devastating, likely season-ending knee injury in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs, following his appearance on the cover of the magazine's Sept. 1 NFL Preview issue.
SI's unfortunate headline: "Bring it."
Through the years, the SI cover jinx has been blamed for everything from a litany of injuries to Michael Jordan's divorce. And SI itself weighed in on the history of its own cover jinx in a 2002 issue that sported a black cat on the cover.
Mr. Brady, for his part, had proven remarkably resilient to the cover jinx during his career. He had appeared on the cover seven previous times and had never missed a game due to injury.
The resurgence of the SI jinx comes as another fabled football omen took a hit Sunday. The "Madden curse," which refers to the poor seasons enjoyed by players who appear on EA Sports' "Madden NFL" video-game cover each year, got off to a rocky start as this year's cover boy, Brett Favre, enjoyed a wildly successful and victorious debut with the New York Jets.
Prior to last season, when cover boy Vince Young posted a strong campaign for the Tennessee Titans, several athletes featured on the cover of "Madden NFL" had their seasons cut short by injury.
