On this date in 1885, Louis Pasteur gave the first successful rabies vaccine to Joseph Meister, a nine year old boy who had been bitten by a rabid dog. Meister grew up to become the caretaker for the Pasteur Institute until he killed himself in 1940 due to despair over the Nazi occupation of Paris.
